Lane Kiffin wonât take bait on Tennessee sanctions, but âI got a lot of thoughts on that caseâ
Lane Kiffin knew the question about Tennessee was question Thursday during his time at SEC media days in Nashville.
“That didn’t take long,” he said as it was one of the first questions asked of the Ole Miss coach.

Kiffin, who was the head coach in Knoxville in 2009, is well aware the Vols were found to have committed 18 Level I violations, the most severe, and said most involved recruiting infractions and direct payments to athletes and their families — benefits that totaled approximately $60,000.
“I got a lot of thoughts on that case,” Kiffin said. “The case at USC. The case at Tennessee. Penalties and all of that. I’m not really going to get into that. We’re here to talk about Ole Miss.”

Tennessee was fined $8 million and four staffers, including then head-coach Jeremy Pruitt, were given show-cause orders for infractions detailed in the more than 80-page report. Pruitt was fired in early 2021 and was given a six-year show-cause order.
“I’m happy for (head) coach Josh Heupel,” Kiffin said. “I read where he was ecstatic about the penalties and the $8 million fine, so that probably tells you about how severe the penalties are in their eyes. I’m happy for them that they didn’t have to go through what we went through. Good for them.”
In addition, the Vols must vacate all 11 of its wins from the 2019 and 2020 seasons under Pruitt. Pruitt’s final record is now 5-19, and the school’s all-time record is 856-410-53.
The vacated wins are part of the penalties from the NCAA from a report that outlined more than 200 violations during Pruitt’s three-year tenure in Knoxville.
